Friends Of St Lawrence

Picture of the outside of Gotham Church

St Lawrence Church stands in a very prominent position in Gotham village. Founded some 850 years ago, it is a Grade I listed building and provides a welcoming space available for the community as a whole, not just the Church folk, which a number of groups can testify to following the fire at the Memorial Hall in 2023. We believe that no one in Gotham would want to see it fall into disrepair.

Unfortunately, repairs are costly as we have to use traditional materials and employ contractors who are skilled in conservation work as well as having all work supervised by a specialist architect who has to ensure it complies with standards laid down.

Every 5 years we have to have an inspection, called a Quinquennial, carried out to determine what work is necessary; the latest inspection was in 2024. Thankfully there is nothing urgent required, but over the next 5 years, work is necessary to the outside rendering which is looking rather sad, to the glazing and stonework of the clerestory (that’s the upper level of windows above the side extensions) as well as a number of smaller tasks. All in all, we will have to find some £5,000 each year for the next 5 years to pay for it.

The FOSsiL’s are a group of Gotham villagers who value our Church building and who engage with the wider village to help keep the fabric of the building in good order which enables the Church community to handle the day-to-day maintenance as well running the building.

We are very grateful for their efforts on our behalf.
